How I Flipped Blogs and Earned x8 of My Investment
Welcome to my first case study, where I will go through my experience of flipping a blog on Flippa.com to give you guys some insights into the process.
I’ll explain it briefly for those who don’t know what this is. Flipping a blog is the process of buying a pre-existing blog and then selling it for a higher price. This can be done through various marketplaces like Flippa.com, EmpireFlippers.com, or even Craigslist if you’re feeling adventurous.
This case study aims to show you how I could flip my blog for an x8 return on my investment.
The Background
Before I get into the sale details, let me give you some background information on the blog.
The blog I flipped was a premade travel blog sold on Flippa. The previous owner is a professional flipper—just like me—who creates blogs just for the sake of selling them as soon as possible (roughly after three months, when the domains can be transferred out if needed).
The site had 15 short articles, and the writing quality was relatively poor. So were the images. Before I bought it, the blog had zero outreach/subscribers/email list and zero traffic. There were also zero income streams attached to this site at all, so my plan was to buy it, fix it up, and flip it ASAP.
The Process
Now that you have some context let me walk you through the process I followed to buy this blog.
First, I did a domain valuation to check its estimated value. You can use GoDaddy for this or any other domain valuation tool. GoDaddy valued the site at about $1,300, which is pretty decent.
The price tag of the site was meager—$75 only!—so I decided to buy it without any hesitation. It took the seller and me roughly a week to finalize the sale.
Once the purchase was complete, I started working on the site immediately. I updated all the articles with new, improved writing, added some high-quality images; changed the theme; created a custom logo, and did some essential outreach to get the initial site traffic.
After about two weeks of working on improving it, the site now had over 60 articles, a premium theme at $69, beautiful loyalty-free photos (from Unsplash) across all posts, a simple logo, and around 200 visitors from various sources.
I was ready to sell. Now comes the fun part: selling this baby and getting my returns!
How to Flip a Blog for 8x Profit
I listed the site for sale on Flippa.com to find a buyer who will take over this blog. Note that I had zero to very little traffic at the time, so my main goal was to sell it off as soon as possible.
I decided to put in a (relatively) high offer for such a starter site to have room for negotiation. I listed the site for $6xx. The sale was up in about two weeks, with a lot of back-and-forth communication with potential buyers.
In the end, a buyer who planned to buy my other listings came across this site and would love to acquire it instead. Since she would like to purchase several websites from me, we both agreed on $629 for the site.
Actually, this was not my most significant return. I also bought another site for $45 (yes, forty-five bucks) and scored a return of x15 on that investment. Sounds too good to be true? Well, I will share more with you in my next case study!
Final Words
